Waterman of Tsavo
He might not be a philosopher, but he lived his life by one philosophy- compassion. Meet Patrick Mwalua, an ordinary Kenyan pea farmer, who rose to become an extraordinary force of nature, driven by a heart that beats for his fellow creatures.
When unforgiving droughts began to claim lives in Tsavo National Park, Patrick couldn’t stand idly by. He said, “I saw animals suffering, walking long distances in search of water. I knew I had to do something”. Armed with determination and empathy, he started renting water trucks, embarking on weekly missions to deliver life-saving water to parched waterholes. His actions have saved countless elephants, zebras, and buffalo, earning him the fitting title, “The Waterman of Tsavo.”
Patrick travelled over 70 kilometres several times a week, hauling thousands of litres of water to the wilderness through non-existent roads and poor infrastructure.
But Patrick’s mission goes beyond water delivery. He educates local communities about conservation, inspiring a new generation to protect their natural heritage.
Though Patrick Mwalua received modest international support later in his journey, his story began with an unwavering belief in dedicating himself to a noble cause. Despite his passing in 2024 due to kidney failure, Patrick’s legacy endures, inspiring countless hearts as a true angel of compassion.
